-Khmer Rouge=red(communism)--ethnic group of cambodia
-goal: return Cambodia to traditional ways before the french
A. Revolution/Abolition of old ways and old institutes
-rolls back the clock-PESC changes-abolishing old ways-killing everybody who was western educated
-said that the US was coming as a reason to get everybody out of the city
-the communes didnt work
--Tuol Sleng Prison (the aushwitz of cambodia)- people were tourtured and killed
-on farms everybody had to look the same (uniforms and couldnt show emotion
-killing fields-where you were killed is where you will always lay

III. The War in Vietnam
A. Cause
1. one interpretation- cold war

  • proxy way to stop communism
  • before WWII- appeasement [sweet talk] of Hitler failed
  • get tough with Stalin (prevent falling dominoes)
2. second interpretation- civil war

  • between christian french-educated elite [government of South Vietnam] and poor Buddhist peasants [NVN and VC]
B. Conflict: Three Phases
1. Before Gulf of Tonkin [1964]- USA gives military aid (weapons and advisors) to government of SVN- naval engagement
2. From Gulf of Tonkin to Tet Offensive [1968]

  • Gulf of Tonkin resolution gives LBJ a blank check
  • LBJ sends in combat troops
  • bombing campaign
  • until Tet, we thought we were winning
  • Tet Offensive- VC surprise attack on US troops
    • New Years [Tet]
    • "earthquake", but USA eventually won
    • US decided they were losing
3. From Tet to Fall of Saigon/ Ho Chi Minh City [1975]
C. Consequences
1. Three Dominoes Fell

  • South Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos
2. US public becomes divided-increased opposition to the war
  • protests, increasing opposition

  • cross between quicksand and mud sinkhole [got stuck]

  • believed they were descendants of Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess of Shintoism

  3. The strongest daimyo became the shogun, who really ran Japan (Emperor was for show)
  4. Samurai served the daimyo
  • Samurai were professional, public soldiers in wartime. Administrators in peacetime.
  • Lived by code of Bushido
  • Performed ritual suicide if dishonored
